Ballet Kelowna celebrates Canada’s 150th Anniversary with fresh and exciting classical and contemporary dance and music. Works for 150 Moves by established and emerging Canadian choreographers will delight audiences of all ages.
Dénouement was originally commissioned by Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, the pas-de-deux Dénouement was created by Matjash Mrozewski to showcase the tremendous talents of NBoC dancers at the Eighth International Competition for the Erik Bruhn Prize. A work of stunning complexity, intricate formations manifest and disappear as the dancers rhythmically disentangle and unfold themselves from one another’s grasp.
Set to a medley of iconic spirituals, Donald Sales new work for Ballet Kelowna, Elephant in a Room, explores the history of enslavement and escape via the underground railroad to Canada. Sales has created movement that reflects the plight of refugees and the frustrations of today’s divisive political climate.
Former Artistic Director of Ballet BC, John Alleyne’s neo-classical quartet – Split House Geometric – is a vigorous, precision-perfect work. Poetic moments of pure contemporary ballet juxtaposed with sharp, staccato movements with bodies creating geometric shapes to brilliant effect.
Doppeling is best described as “a gender-bending vision of doppelganger ballerinas breaking loose.” (Georgia Straight) Simone Orlando’s cleverly constructed, theatrical romp is a visual feast. An ensemble of dancers – wearing the same bobbed wig and skin-toned bodysuits – provide mesmerizing commentary on conformity and individuality that is at once playful, serene, and edge of your seat fun.
The program will finish with a vibrant new work set to Oscar Peterson’s iconic Canadiana Suite. Co-created by award-winning choreographers Simone Orlando and Donald Sales, this energetic group piece pays tribute to the regions and cultures of Canada through an expressive blend of classical ballet and jazz.
The performance will be hosted by Ms. Orlando who will provide entertaining and informative commentary on each work and following the production, moderates an audience-led Q&A session with the Company.
