This will be an introduction to encaustic and the iron. Students will be using pigmented wax and encaustic paper. The instructor will go over some safety issues and how to set up a workplace. Then students will learn how to paint an abstract/fantasy card, a basic landscape and how to incorporate stamps into the work. People should bring an apron or wear appropriate clothing for painting with wax. It’s almost impossible to get rid of drips. No experience required.
Artist Bio: Irene Gut was born and raised in Switzerland and moved to the North East of British Columbia almost 23 years ago. At first, she felt a sense of being lost in the vastness of this big beautiful country, but then learned to embrace the quiet beauty of the land on daily walks through the hills and valleys of the beautiful Peace River Region. About eight years ago Irene came across encaustic for the first time when a card created with wax and the iron was given to her from a cousin in Switzerland. She was hooked! Over the years Irene has taken several workshops with well known encaustic artists and learned much more about the process of painting with wax. “To me working with wax is relaxing, satisfying, fascinating and yes, sometimes frustrating and challenging but I love it. I fell in love with the versatility and vibrancy of that medium and at the same time there is a luminosity that only wax can have. And of course you can’t beat the wonderful smell of it!
